Euria Rock Hole.

Description.

Jimmy Scott was born at Eucla, and his wife Myrtle was born in White Well. The Scott family lived at Eucla and Mundrabilla before moving east to White Well, Fowlers Bay in the 1920’s.

The family then settled in Bookabie in the 1930’s. Jimmy and his family worked and camped around different bores in this area while fencing, hunting and sheep herding.

In 1992 the Scott family prepared a community plan in an endeavour to get funds to buy a large farm west of Ceduna. Scotdesco Inc. was successful with this application to obtain the property and the community ‘Tjilkaba’ (prickle) was born. The descendants of Jimmy and Myrtle Scott still reside, work and manage this community.

Within the heart of wombat country, Scotdesco is a small Aboriginal community situated either side of the Eyre highway, 25 kilometres west of Penong where living descendants of the Wirangu family group represent the spirit of determination within Aboriginal people.

The countryside and surrounds consist mainly of grasslands and Mallee scrub – ideal for hunting kangaroo (marlu), wombat (wardu) and sleepy lizard (gulda).

There are three rock holes near the land; Yangura, Mitcherie and Euria Rock holes. Euria Rock hole is the best known and biggest.

Rockholes provide the primary supply of potable water and are thus the nuclei oftraditional human settlement. In the west are the major uplands of the Pilbara, with accompanying significant waterholes. Granite outcrops collect water in naturally formed pools which were expanded and cleaned by Aboriginal people. These rock holes extent and their interconnectedness through Ancestral paths and people’s paths show the importance of the Ooldea ‘water route’.
